Equipment

To play the game of badminton, one needs a court with a net, a racket, and a shuttlecock. The Laws of Badminton contain formal requirements for this equipment. The most important of these specifications are presented in the discussions below.

(1) Court

The singles court is 17 ft. wide and 44 ft. long the doubles court is 3 feet wider because of the two side alleys. There are also a center line, a short service line, and a doubles long service line.

The court is bisected laterally by a net elevated five feet (5′) above the ground at the center of the court and five feet one inch (5’1″) at the net posts, which are placed on the doubles sidelines. When the game is played indoors, usually on a gymnasium floor, the ceiling should be not less than thirty feet (30′) over the full court area, and this space should be entirely free of girders and other obstructions. There should be at least four feet(4′) of clear floor space surrounding each court and between any two courts.  무료중계

The lines of the court should be white or yellow, and they must be 11/2 inches wide. Unfortunately, many school gymnasium floors in tile United States have badminton lines only 1 inch wide. These should be corrected eventually, and new courts should abide by the Laws.   NBA중계

(2) Racket

For many years, rackets were made entirely of wood. Shafts made of steel or fiberglass were introduced in the 1950s, but a revoltion in materials technology has made wood rackets obsolete. Virtually all rackets of quality are now constructed of various blends of carbon, graphite, boron, aluminum, and steel. These rackets are very light around 3.5 ounces and so strong that they can be strung much tighter than before. Also, the modern rackets do not warp and hence need no press. The racket’s overall dimensions cannot exceed 27 inches by 9 inches, and the length of the head cannot exceed 13 inches.

Each racket manufacturer offers several models to suit each player’s ability to play and pay: prices vary from $10 to $120. Since the racket is the most important item of equipment, novices should ask a more-experienced player for help in selection. The cheaper rackets are heavier, and often more durable, but not so easy to swing quickly. The more expensive rackets are lighter and more flexible, but can suffer damage more easily in collisions with the floor or a partner’s racket. Some experimenting is suggested before one chooses a racket to buy.

The better known brands of rackets are Adidas, Black Knight, Carlton, Dunlop, Flying, HL, I.S.I., Kawasaki, Pro-Kennex, g’lazenger, Sportcraft, Sugiyama, Vicourt, Victor, Wilson, Yamaha, and Yonex. Few sporting goods stores in the United States carry a full line of rackets, although most will handle special orders in large quantities. Rackets are strung with gut or some sort of synthetic string, like nylon. In the past, better players preferred gut, but the synthetics now equal the popularity of gut because the racket can be strung more tightly with them and because the synthetics cost less and last longer. A racket should be strung at between 15 and 20 lbs. tension, and a racket cover is suggested to protect the strings.

(3) Shuttlecocks

The traditional feathered shuttlecock is used in all major competitions. Various synthetic shuttles are acceptable, and especially suitable for club and school play, if their flight characteristics are similar. The feathered shuttle must weigh from 4.74 to 5.50 grams and have fourteen to sixteen feathers fixed in a cork base covered with a thin layer of leather or similar material. The equired dimensions of the shuttle are given in the Laws. These requirements give the shuttle its unusual, although predictable flight patterns.

In synthetic shuttles, the feathers are replaced by a “skirt” of some manufactured material, but such shuttles must meet the specifications of the feather shuttle. A good synthetic shuttle costs slightly less than the feather shuttle and normally lasts longer.

Both kinds of shuttles, but especially the feather shuttles, will last much longer if they are humidified. This keeps the shuttle from drying, becoming brittle, and thus breaking. This is simple to do: glue a small piece of sponge on the inside of the cap of the tube which holds the shuttles, and keep the sponge damp.

In order to insure that the game takes the same form whenever and wherever played, it is imperative to standardize a shuttle’s speed. A profound difference in the type of game results if a fast shuttle instead of a slow shuttle is selected for use. The heavier the shuttle, the faster it flies. The shuttle also flies faster under conditions of increased temperature and altitude. Weights of manufactured shuttles therefore vary in order to meet conditions at a particular time: some manufacturers merely classify shuttles as slow, medium, or fast. Under normal conditions, a medium (5.1 gram) shuttle is appropriate. Each time the game is played, the shuttle should function at the same speed regardless of atmospheric conditions. The speed of the shuttle can be altered by crimping the stalks of the feathers near the tip and bending them slightly outward to slow the shuttle and inward to speed it up.

The testing of a shuttle’s speed takes place at the beginning of a match. The test is made by having a player strike the shuttle with a full underhand stroke from a spot directly above one back boundary line in a direction parallel to the sideline and at an upward angle. It must land in a three-foot range centered on the opposite doubles long service line.

The better known brands of feather shuttles are Black Knight, Carlton: Flying, HL, Rackets International, RSL, Sportcraft, Victor, and. Yonex. The price for a tube of a dozen varies froth $15 to $20. Synthetic shuttles are manufactured by most of these companies, as well as by EST International, Thunderbird, Wilson, and others. Some synthetic shuttles are available in yellow for better visibility in halls with light-colored walls. It is important to buy better quality synthetics, which cost about $12 per dozen, because the cheaper ones seldom have correct speed or satisfactory flight characteristics.   MLB중계
